Shelter House is a non-profit organization that has provided housing and supportive services to the homeless of Southeast Iowa since 1983.

Shelter House is Johnson County, Iowa's only general use homeless shelter, providing transitional shelter to men, women, and children, including the disabled and the elderly. 

Our mission is to provide shelterbasic and transitional resourceswhile encouraging self-sufficiency, to any person in our community who is homeless.

United Way of Johnson CountyShelter House is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. As a partner agency of the United Way of Johnson County, we have successfully met all local membership accountability standards in finance, ethics, governance, and diversity.

Sign-up for admission to shelter begins daily at 6:00PM. You must be present to sign-up.

AmeriCorps VISTA Employment-Housing Development

The Employment-Housing Development AmeriCorps VISTA will work with a team of Shelter House staff and many community volunteers to develop new tools and provide education to assist with housing and employment for people experiencing homelessness.  They will work with the Johnson County Affordable Homes Coalition specifically.  Download the full job posting here or contact Phoebe for more information at: phoebetrepp@shelterhouseiowa.org. AmeriCorps VISTA Lodge

The Lodge AmeriCorps VISTA will work with a team of Shelter House Lodge staff and several specialized volunteers to expand and market the Fairweather Lodge program.  The Lodge program is a permanent supported housing and employment program for adults with a chronic mental illness who are experiencing homelessness.  Download the full job posting here or contact Phoebe for more information at: phoebetrepp@shelterhouseiowa.org. HVRP Retention Specialist

Overnight Shelter Coordinator

Are you looking for a job or experience in human services? Shelter House seeks a part-time Shelter Coordinator to work overnight shifts providing support and assistance to those experiencing homelessness. Your gift directly supports and advances our mission to provide shelter, basic and transitional resources, while encouraging self-sufficiency, to any person in our community who is homeless.

  • $25 will sponsor a night of shelter and supportive services for a person who is homeless in our community.
  • $100 will sponsor a night of shelter and supportive services for a family in need.
  • $175 will sponsor a week of shelter and supportive services for someone trying to restart their life.
