National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program where people come together across the country to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Participating groups spend the week holding a series of educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy events.
Foodies Fighting Homelessness is a fun and interactive way for restaurants to do what they do best by serving their flavorful dishes to interested diners while giving community members a chance to interact and discuss issues facing our community today. Join us at one of the many participating locations in our community. Our connected approach allows restaurants to shine in their own setting while bringing the community together.
When Iowa’s frigid winter blows in, the change in weather can be life-threatening for people experiencing homelessness. As temperatures drop, they are at an increased risk of developing exposure-related conditions and dying from the below-zero temperatures. The Out of the Cold campaign funds our low-barrier Winter Emergency Shelter and Overflow Shelter and provides increased shelter capacity which is essential to accommodate the amplified need during winter months.
Check it Out! Our annual Shelter House Book Sale will be held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, Bldg. C. We’ll have gently used books plus music, movies, art, and vintage tees for sale. Dedicated book worms can purchase Early Entry passes for admission to the Book Sale before the general public. If you have books you’d like to donate, they can be dropped off beginning February 2019.
