Help meet our clients’ most basic needs

Donations for all Shelter House programs may be dropped off at Shelter House, 429 Southgate Avenue, Iowa City. Due to limited storage capacity, we can only take clothing appropriate for the current season. As a result of increased activity within the shelter and front desk, the best time to drop off donations is between 10am – 4pm 7 days/week; however, we’re staffed 24/7. This will allow time to receive and process donations efficiently.

Considering food donations? Shelter House operates a licensed commercial kitchen. Due to the strict nature of our license, we are unable to take many food donations. If you’d like to donate food, contact Tonia Franklin, Kitchen Manager, for information on what food and non-food items are acceptable.

Cash donations are also welcome which allow us to purchase needed items that we don’t receive or are able to purchase for less.

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash

  • Razors and shaving cream

  • Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing (in-season)
  • Twin XL bedding
  • Bottled water

PLEASE NOTE: We are unable to accept chlorine bleach

Move-Ins

  • Dishes (Plates and bowls)
  • Silverware
  • Pots and pans
  • New or gently used mattresses (twin, full, and queen)

Street Outreach

  • Sleeping bags
  • Tents
  • Sleeping pads/mats
  • Reusable water bottles

 

Consider making a donation from our Amazon Wish List

Amazon Wishlist Items can be mailed to Shelter House 429 Southgate Avenue, Iowa City, IA 52240.

Items that cannot be accepted may be taken to Stuff Etc. at 851 Hwy 6 E, Ste 103, Iowa City, IA (in the old Kmart building) with proceeds deposited into the Shelter House account or donated to Habitat for Humanity Restore.
