our greatest needs

The list below is updated regularly based on Shelter House’s most needed items:

  • Deodorant
  • Diapers (greatest needs are size 4 and medium/large Depends)
  • Toothpaste
  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Iowa City/Coralville bus passes or strip tickets
  • Facial Tissue
  • Laundry detergent (high efficiency and regular)

In addition to these greatest needs, we accept the following donations:

  • Toilet paper
  • Blankets
  • Ear plugs
  • Grocery store gift cards
  • Phone cards & cell phones with minutes plan (ie Tracfone)
  • Over-the-counter medications:
    • Antihistamine
    • Sinus Medication
    • Acetaminophen
    • DayQuil
  • Men and women work clothes (particularly white shirts and black pants)
  • Steel-toed boots
  • PLEASE NOTE: We do not accept chlorine bleach

Due to our very limited storage capacity, please check directly with Alex Stanton, our Communications Coordinator before bringing any other items to Shelter House:

Donations should be dropped off at Shelter House (429 Southgate Avenue, Iowa City)

Monday thru Friday between 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Items that cannot be accepted may be taken to Stuff Etc. for the Shelter House account or taken to Habitat for Humanity Restore

Donations to the Shelter House Lodge Program

The Shelter House Lodge is in need of new or gently used items to furnish its homes. Current needs of the Fairweather Lodge include:

Recliner
Dishwasher
Computer
Lawn mower
Tools: house and garden tools
Wall art (pictures, picture frames, etc.)

Please contact Erin at erin@shelterhouseiowa.org or via phone at 319-530-4729 to arrange for delivery/pick-up of these items.

Shelter House operates a licensed commercial kitchen. Due to the strict nature of that license, we are unable to take many food donations.

Please call the shelter at 319-331-0326 and speak to Kim, our Kitchen Manager, In-Kind Donations  if you have food to donate.
