Job Training:

Participants in case management are able to receive job training and part time employment through our Fresh Starts Janitorial crew and Culinary Starts catering services. Training is also carried out through paid internships and general job search and employment readiness training.

Job Training focuses on:

  • Job readiness and employability skills training
  • Identifying interest/skills within a particular field
  • Building employment resume and references
  • Learning and applying new job skills
  • Providing on-site job coaching/development for interns’
  • Securing employment placement if available

Computer Lab

Shelter House Computer Lab is open: Monday-Thursday 8AM-10AM for individuals searching for employment opportunities.

Come to Computer Lab for:

  • Assistance creating resumes
  • Information on current job openings
  • Opportunity to meet recruiters from local companies
  • Workshops on applying for employment, life skills, and basic computer skills
  • Help applying for housing and food assistance
  • Interview tips, clothes and practice
  • Access to hundreds of employers in our online database
  • Access to pre-screened housing listings in our online database

Internal Employment Services:

Culinary Starts

Culinary Starts offers food preparation training in a commercial setting. Successful participants will become Servsafe certified and equipped to work in a variety of food service and restaurant settings. The proceeds from our contracted and catered meals go directly towards the food production program and Shelter House’s mission of helping people move beyond homelessness.

Fresh Starts

Shelter House hires reliable individuals to work for it’s professional janitorial service, Fresh Starts. Our crew is trained and supervised to meet a range of janitorial needs an gain employment skills. If you’re interested in contracting with Fresh Starts as your organization’s janitorial service, find more information here or contact our Fresh Starts manager, Erin at erin@shelterhouseiowa.org.

Internships

The training an intern receives during an internship can assist in moving towards a particular field of employment and teaching needed skills for achieving a future employment goal.  Internships include:
